What is Turbo Roommate Match-up?

Turbo Roommate Match-up is like speed dating, except instead of searching for romance, you will be searching for a roommate. Each meeting will last 3 minutes, giving you the opportunity to get to know a possible roommate and gather information about him or her.

How does it work?

Each participant will be assigned a number. Half of the group will be assigned to seats while the other half will rotate among the seats at 3 minute intervals, meeting the people sitting across from them. You will have 3 minutes to talk with the person opposite you and decide if you have found a good match. At the end of the 3 minutes a whistle will sound and the rotating group will move to the next seat at their right.

What if I don’t know what to talk about?

There will be suggested questions and topics to discuss at each table.

How long will I have with each person?

Three minutes.

Do I have to pay?

No; Turbo Roommate Match-Up is completely free.

Do I need to register?

Registration for TRMU consists of a question on the registration to the fair. If you are attending the fair, you just need to click yes for the question that asks whether you will participate in TRMU. That is all! Your registration lets us know how many students will participate, and allow us to make adjustments as needed to ensure a smooth TRMU session.

Is there a cutoff for registration?

There is no formal cutoff for TRMU registration, however, it is strongly recommended that you pre-register to make sure there is enough space to accomodate all interested participants.

Who can participate?

Any University of Maryland undergraduate or graduate student who is searching for a roommate for an off-campus property.

Can I search for both male and female roommates?

Yes; there will be three sessions in the Match-Up: Undergraduate males seeking male roommates, Undergraduate females seeking female roommates, and graduate students. While there will not be a co-ed undergraduate session, the room in which TRMU is held with be left open for students to meet one another after the formal session.

How many Match-ups will I have?

As long as enough people register, each participant will meet 10 people in a session.

What happens if I find someone I’m interested in living with?

If you find someone you think you are interested in living with, be sure to exchange contact information! TRMU is designed to expose you to potential roommates, but we encourage you to continue communicating to gather more information about the people you meet in the sessions.

What if I’m physically disabled and can’t move around easily?

You will be assigned to a group that stays seated at the tables. (You will still have the same amount of match-ups as the groups who rotate.) Please be sure to indicate on your registration form whether or not you are physically disabled so that we can make these adjustments for you.

How can I best prepare for Turbo Roommate Match-Up?

You will be e-mailed a Roommate Finding Guide with your confirmation when you register. This guide contains the same questions that will be on the tables during the Match-Up. We recommend that you review these questions to determine how you would answer them and which ones are most important for you to obtain answers from others about.
